Hastākshar Issue #20: What do Jamuns reveal about you?

Hello, how’s it going?

Done with your evening chai and biscuit?

Last night, I ended up going on a drive with my friends, having jamun juice at 11:45pm (two glasses, no less).

It reminded me of a story I’d heard 10 years ago – which explained how jamuns reveal the human mental state.

(The technical word for it is ‘Leshya’)

The story begins with six friends

They’re walking through the forest and feel hungry.

Seeing a jamun tree in front of them, the solution is obvious: eat the fruit and satiate your hunger.

But not everyone thinks alike

The first friend says: “Let’s cut the tree and enjoy the jamuns.”

The second friend says: “There’s no need to cut the tree. Just chop off the bigger branches.”

The third boy only wants to chop the smaller branches.

The fourth suggests taking only bigger jamun bunches, leaving the branches alone.

But the story goes on to teach that:

We can continue to be happy without harming others.

The fifth friend wishes to only pick a few jamuns – after all, they wouldn’t need many between the six of them.

But the last one wins hearts. “If we only need enough to fill our stomachs, why bother the tree at all? There are plenty of jamuns that have already fallen to the ground. Let’s eat them.”

Life gives us enough opportunities lying on the ground. Enjoy it.

We need not go around shaking trees unnecessarily.

Not only does it help in being peaceful, but requires lesser effort. A true win-win.

So, which friend do you want to be?

Irrespective of their choices: none of them went hungry.
