Yashvardhan is upset that he only has enough wealth to last 7 generations.
He wants more and requests his mentor, Munshi Trivediji to give a solution to get richer.
The wise Trivediji comes up with a plan.
Yashvardhan walks into the office and directly comes to Trivedi’s desk.
“Have you thought of the plan you were talking about?”
“Yes. There is a simple thing we have to do.”
“What?”
“Feed brahmins.”
“That simple? Let’s go to Brahminwada right away at meal-time today itself.”
A few hours later, they entered the Brahmin locality.
Walking to the first hut, Yashvardhan spotted a thin man in a torn dhoti. Joining his hands, he said, “Sir, I’ve got a meal for your family. Please accept it and bless me.”
The brahmin smiled. “Thank you, young man. But let me first check with my wife.
“Arre, sunti ho? A young man has come to give us food.”
His wife came out of the hut. “But we have food for today. Why don’t you go to someone else in the locality and see someone who doesn’t have food?”
A confused Yashvardhan smiled and moved ahead.
He visited a few more huts, respectfully offering meals to the residents, but they all politely refused.
“We have enough food for 3 days.”
“Thank you so much, but we are fasting.”
“I think we have food for both lunch and dinner. You should find someone that doesn’t have enough.”
And then came the final nail.
A smart-looking young brahmin called out to his wife, “Come out fast, this gentleman is forcing us to accept food and groceries.”
His wife shouted back, “Didn’t you tell him that we already have food for today?”
“I did. But he’s insisting that we take the groceries for tomorrow.”
The young lady stormed out and spoke in a disappointed voice.
“Have you no shame? When you have enough for the day, how can you think of what to do tomorrow?”
Hearing these words, Trivedi smiled. His plan had worked.
Yashvardhan was stunned. He first bowed to the brahmin, and then to Trivediji.
“Thank you for bringing me here.”
I am not asking you to be like the brahmins and not care about tomorrow.
Please do. After all, you would have dreams, responsibilities, insecurities that need material resources to fulfil.
But let us at least appreciate those that exercise restraint and draw the line.
Let us aspire to be happy with fewer needs.
Let us smile even when we think we don’t have enough.
