Hastākshar Issue #70: What story are you telling yourself?

Life is a mess sometimes. Isn’t it?

The last weekend was quite a social phase for me.

I was relishing a wide buffet at a friend’s wedding and then partying in a 5-star hotel for another friend’s birthday.

Dancing, cake-eating, leg-pulling, laughter, and the joy of togetherness.

If you swipe through my group’s Instagram stories, you’ll see pretty girls and dapper boys having the time of their lives.

But there’s another side to this.

Between these events was the hassle of travelling 40 km in Mumbai rains.

Staying up till 2 am (and being so tired that you’re in bed by 8:30 pm)

Running around making arrangements. Haggling with the event staff.

It’s all a part of life.

The question comes down to: what story are you telling yourself?

What side of the story do you want to look at?

That is a choice. Your choice.

The Pandavas were the rulers of Indraprasth.

Their Palace of Illusions was the best piece of architecture in the world.

Devs practically crafted what they wore, ate and interacted with.

Yet their own family was out to kill them.

Krishna. Avatar of Vishnu.

The all-powerful, all-knowing being, right?

Counselled the biggest kings. He stopped major calamities (and catastrophes).

But couldn’t save his parents from death. Saw his entire clan kill themselves.

Raavan. The kidnapper. Usurper of power.

Annexed his brother’s kingdom. Lusted for another man’s wife.

Yet, a scholar. One of the brightest and wisest minds in the world.

A devout bhakt. On multiple occasions, disregarded his own comfort and safety for the deity he revered.

Yes, there is always going to be another side.

You are Pandav, Krishna, and Raavan.

What will you focus on? What story will you tell yourself?

That answer will determine your state in the short term.

And fate in the long term.
