Do you love Captain Jack Sparrow?
I really do. Especially his funny hand movements and eccentric walking style.
It was only two days ago that I read that they’d created the walk not as a random character trait, but because shipping crews learn to walk on tilted boats to avoid sea sickness!
Mind, Blown!
The point is that movies often end up researching and communicating very deep things that we as audiences overlook.
Let’s look at two stories today.
The first is Mahabharat.
It is a well-known tale.
Krishna, the avatar of Vishnu is close to the Pandavas since their childhood.
He is particularly fond of Arjun, and even ends up becoming his charioteer in the Kurukshetra war.
Arjun is unable to heed his advice and attack his cousins Kauravas, when Krishna has to finally tell him that he is god and what the truth of the universe is.
Arjun needs a lot of pushing, cajoling and motivation to realise that he simply has to do what god says, and everything else will be taken care of.
On the other hand, we have a controversial movie named PK.
Here, Aamir Khan is PK, an alien stranded on earth.
He wants only one thing: go back to his planet, where he really belongs.
When someone says that only god can help him, he tries every trick in the book (pun intended) to please god.
He prays, fasts, visits temples, does penance, and much more.
He doesn’t know god or how the divine system works.
What he believes is he doesn’t have to hold back. He gives it his 100% and waits for god to fulfil his part.
And while many find it as an attack on religion, I feel it’s beautiful.
From a spiritual lens, this is the ultimate level of Bhakti Yog.
While the story is about a lost remote and wanting to get home, it is much deeper.
Just read these lines from a song from the movie:
“Hai suna tu bhatke mann ko raah dikhata hai
Main bhi khoya hu mujhe ghar bulata hai
Bhagwan, hai kahan re tu?
Is the ghar (home) here talking about another planet?
Or is it everyone’s real home – the ultimate place where the true nature of our soul is revealed?
Do think about it.
God was with Arjun, yet he was confused and wondering what to do.
PK didn’t waste time thinking. He did things, completely surrendered and was confident that god will come to him.
Based on this faith that the divine will eventually come to us, I will always choose PK over Arjun.
