Answer engine optimisation (AEO) helps your brand get mentioned, quoted or cited in answers from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features. It builds on SEO, but also depends on clear, useful content, credible third-party mentions, original data and consistent brand information across the web.
Start by checking how AI tools describe your brand, improve the pages that answer your customers’ most important questions, and build authority beyond your website. Treat budgets and timelines as estimates, and measure AI visibility alongside branded search, qualified leads and conversions.
Six months ago, a marketing head at a fintech we work with forwarded me a screenshot. Someone in their leadership team had asked ChatGPT to name the best platforms in their category. Three competitors showed up. They didn’t. The brand ranked on page one of Google for the same question.
That screenshot is now the most common way AEO lands on a brand manager’s desk in India. Not as a strategy, but as a question from the top: “Why aren’t we there?”
This guide is my answer to that question. I’ve run The Wise Idiot since 2017, and most of our work today sits with banks, brokers, AMCs, insurers, payments companies and B2B brands. Here’s everything we’ve learned about AEO, written for the person who has to explain it upward, plan it and pay for it.
AEO isn’t a new channel. It’s the old job of being the most useful, most trusted answer, except now a machine is deciding who that is, and it reads the whole internet before it decides.
What is AEO (answer engine optimisation)?
AEO is the practice of making your brand the source an AI system picks when it answers a question in your category. Success means being named, quoted or linked inside the answer, not just ranked below it.
The “answer engines” are ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and voice assistants.
You’ll also hear GEO (generative engine optimisation), LLM SEO and AI search optimisation. In practice, these mean the same job. The term GEO comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and others, later accepted at KDD 2024, which found that certain content methods could raise a source’s visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. Getting cited in LLM responses, the part GEO focuses on, comes down to five repeatable steps.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what changes for a brand manager
SEO gets a page ranked so people click. AEO gets your brand named inside the answer, often with no click at all. The biggest change isn’t the tactics; it’s who has to be involved.
| Factor | Traditional SEO | AEO / GEO |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | Rank a page in the top 10 blue links | Be named, quoted or cited inside the AI answer |
| What the user does | Scans results, clicks, reads your page | Reads one answer, often never clicks |
| Unit of success | A ranking page | A passage, a fact, a brand mention |
| Where authority comes from | Mostly your site and its backlinks | Your site plus what Reddit, YouTube, news sites, reviews and LinkedIn say about you |
| Query shape | 2 to 4 word keywords | Long, conversational questions with context (“best term plan for a 32-year-old smoker in Pune”) |
| Main KPI | Organic sessions, rankings | Share of AI answers, citations, branded search, assisted conversions |
| Who has to be involved | SEO team, writers, developers | Writers, designers, SEO, PR, social, product, leadership, legal |
The last row is the one most brand managers miss. SEO could live inside one team. AEO can’t.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO sits on top of SEO. Google’s own guidance on its AI features says there are no special optimisations or new markup required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that standard SEO practices still apply. If Google can’t crawl, understand and trust your page, its AI won’t quote it either. The practical SEO side of ranking in AI Overviews is covered in AI SEO in 2026: a practical guide to ranking in AI Overviews.
But AEO asks for more than SEO did. A Semrush study of AI search traffic found almost 90% of pages cited by ChatGPT search ranked at position 21 or lower on Google for related queries. Ranking still helps. It just isn’t the whole story anymore.
Every brand manager asks me if SEO is dead. My answer: SEO is now the entry ticket. AEO is what decides whether you get on stage.
Why AEO matters for Indian brands right now
AEO matters in India because the audience has already moved. India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market, Google launched AI Mode in India before any other country outside the US, and fewer people click through when an AI answer is on screen. If your brand isn’t in the answer, the customer may never reach your website.
| Signal | The number | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT users in India | About 100 million weekly active users; India is the second-largest market after the US and has the most student users globally (Feb 2026) | TechCrunch, citing Sam Altman |
| Google AI Overviews reach | 2 billion monthly users; AI Mode 100 million+ monthly users across the US and India (July 2025) | TechCrunch, Alphabet Q2 2025 call |
| AI Mode in India | India was AI Mode’s first market outside the US; Hindi support followed in September 2025 | Search Engine Land, MediaNama |
| Clicks when an AI summary shows | Users clicked a result 8% of the time with an AI summary, vs 15% without; links inside the summary got about 1% | Pew Research Center, July 2025 |
| Position 1 click-through | About 58% lower on keywords with an AI Overview (300,000 keywords, December 2025 data), up from 34.5% in Ahrefs’ first study | Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| Value of an AI search visitor | 4.4 times a traditional organic visitor, based on conversion rate | Semrush |
Why India is different
Indian searchers ask in Hinglish, in regional languages and by voice. They compare before they commit, especially with money, health and education. A first-time investor in Indore asks ChatGPT “SIP vs FD which is better for 3 years” long before they open an app. That conversational, comparison-heavy behaviour is exactly where answer engines are strongest, and where most Indian brand websites are thinnest.
Trust also travels differently here. Indians lean on people: a relative, a finfluencer, a YouTube reviewer, a Reddit thread on r/IndiaInvestments. AI engines read those same sources. So in India, AEO is as much about what others say about you as what you say about yourself.
In India, the AI answer is the new ‘ask a friend’. Your job is to make sure the friend has heard of you, and has heard good things.
How do AI answer engines decide which brands to mention?
Answer engines mention brands that show up clearly, consistently and credibly across many trusted sources for the questions people ask. They don’t rank one page. They break a question into many smaller searches, pull passages from across the web, and assemble an answer from the sources they trust most.
What happens between the question and the answer
- The question gets split.Google calls this “query fan-out”. Robby Stein, Google’s VP of Product for Search, has said AI Mode runs several related background searches, including on topics the user never mentioned. A question about “best credit card for travel” also fetches lounge access, forex markup and reward-point value.
- Passages get retrieved. The engine pulls specific paragraphs, tables and lists, not whole pages. A clear 50-word answer under a question-style heading is easier to lift than the same fact buried in paragraph nine.
- Sources get weighed.Engines prefer sources that agree with each other and that look trustworthy. If your website, your Wikipedia page, a news article and a Reddit thread all say the same thing about you, that claim is safe to repeat.
- The answer gets written. The model blends what it retrieved with what it learned in training. Brands that were widely discussed before the model’s training cut-off already have a head start.
Where AI engines look
Your website is only one input. A Semrush analysis of 325,000 prompts across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity (January to February 2026) ranked LinkedIn the second most-cited domain overall, behind only Reddit, appearing in about 11% of responses on average.
For a brand manager, that changes the brief. Your leaders’ LinkedIn posts, your YouTube explainers and what customers say on Reddit are now part of your search strategy, which is why LinkedIn content matters more than ever in 2026.
Why E-E-A-T is the logic underneath
Google’s guidance on creating helpful, reliable content asks creators to show Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust (E-E-A-T), and says plainly that trust matters most. It also asks you to make clear who wrote a piece, how it was made and why it exists. AI engines face the same problem as Google: they must not repeat something wrong. So they lean on the same signals.
| Signal | What it looks like | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | First-hand examples, customer stories, screenshots, “we tested this” | Product, customer success, writers |
| Expertise | Named authors with real credentials, reviewed by a subject expert | Writers, internal SMEs |
| Authoritativeness | Mentions in news, industry reports, Wikipedia, citations by other sites | PR, leadership, partnerships |
| Trust | Accurate numbers, sources, update dates, disclosures, a working contact page, clean reviews | Legal, compliance, web team |
In finance, health and education, Google treats topics as “Your Money or Your Life”. The bar for trust is higher, and the cost of a wrong number is real. This is where most of our work sits.
I tell clients: E-E-A-T isn’t an SEO checklist. It’s a description of a brand people would trust with their money. AI engines are just checking whether you are that brand.
AEO needs writing, design, SEO, PR and distribution working as one
AEO fails when it’s handed to one SEO person with a tool subscription. It works when writers, designers, SEO, PR, social and leadership pull in the same direction, because answer engines read all of their output together.
This is how we’ve always worked at The Wise Idiot, long before anyone called it AEO. We started in 2017 as a writing company. Over the years we added design, websites, SEO, LinkedIn and leadership branding, because clients kept telling us the pieces didn’t work apart. AEO turned out to be the reason they belonged together.
The six workstreams of AEO
| Workstream | What it does for AEO | What “good” looks like | Where we do this |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Writing | Gives engines clear, quotable answers | Question-led headings, a 40 to 60 word direct answer up top, original numbers, named expert authors, plain language | Content marketing services |
| 2. Structure and SEO | Makes content crawlable, understandable and connected | Clean technical health, schema, topic clusters, internal links, fast pages, comparison and “vs” pages | BFSI SEO, Fintech SEO, our LLM SEO framework |
| 3. Design | Turns facts into formats engines and people can lift | Real HTML tables (not images of tables), labelled charts with alt text, calculators, comparison grids, infographics that carry the number in the caption | Corporate website design, Landing pages |
| 4. Proof and PR | Builds the third-party agreement engines look for | Original research and reports, media quotes, Wikipedia-worthy facts, review profiles, partner mentions | Research reports and data stories inside our content retainers; social proof for BFSI and SaaS |
| 5. Distribution | Puts your answers where engines read | LinkedIn, YouTube, X threads, Reddit and Quora participation, newsletters, syndication | BFSI LinkedIn marketing, Fintech LinkedIn marketing |
| 6. Leadership voice | Gives the brand a credible human face | A CXO or founder posting a real point of view, consistently, in their own words | Personal branding for CXOs, LinkedIn ghostwriting |
Why distribution is the part most brands skip
Most brands treat a published blog as the finish line. For AEO, it’s the start. One research piece should become a LinkedIn PDF carousel, a founder post, an X thread, a short video, a newsletter section and a quote pitched to a journalist. Each version lands on a domain that AI engines cite, and each one repeats the same fact with your name attached. A content distribution checklist keeps the sequence repeatable, and in regulated categories LinkedIn reach also depends on quality content and paid promotion working together.
That repetition is the point. When the CEO’s post, the blog, the landing page and a news quote all say the same thing, an AI engine can repeat it with confidence.
SEO taught us to build a great house. AEO is about making sure the whole neighbourhood knows your address. That’s writing, design and distribution, not just keywords.
SEO fundamentals we never skip
Going beyond SEO doesn’t mean skipping it. Every AEO engagement we run still starts with the basics: crawlability (including not blocking AI crawlers like GPTBot and Google-Extended without a reason), clean site architecture, internal linking, page speed, a clear author and organisation identity, and schema that matches what’s on the page.
What AEO looks like in practice: examples from fintech and BFSI
The clearest AEO results we’ve seen came from combining search work with distribution and leadership voice. Here are five projects, each showing one part of the system, with numbers from our published case studies.
| Brand and category | What we did | What happened | The AEO lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-border payments fintech (new brand) Case study ↗ | SEO and AEO content built around the questions buyers ask, in a category owned by incumbents | 10,000+ monthly visitors added in 4 to 5 months; 30 keywords in the top 15; cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Featured Snippets and People Also Ask | A new brand can earn AI citations fast if it answers questions better than incumbents do |
| Large Indian broking house (2.4M+ clients) Case study ↗ | ~750 blogs and 100+ collaterals on a topic-cluster plan | 52% more organic traffic; 10,000 keywords in Google’s top 3; 52% more referring domains | Topical depth is the foundation AI engines draw from |
| Kotak Neo (stock broking) Case study ↗ | Research-led sector threads and market-event infographics on X | 745K views on the best thread; 403K on one RBI policy infographic; saves up month on month | Original, design-led explainers spread to the platforms engines read |
| Northern Arc (NBFC) Case study ↗ | A finance-education library for a new platform, written by domain experts | 68 assets in 60 days: 55 blogs, 11 long guides, 2 web pages, by 6 expert writers | Speed and expertise together build the coverage an engine needs to trust a new site |
| Bertelsmann India Investments (VC) Case study ↗ | A LinkedIn voice for the fund and its MD | Followers up from 3,000 to 8,000 in 6 months; 4x average engagement | LinkedIn is one of the most-cited domains in AI answers, and leaders carry trust |
The cross-border fintech project is the one I point brand managers to first. The brand was new, the category was crowded, and nobody inside the company expected AI engines to cite them within a year. They did, because every page answered one real buyer question better than anything else on the web, and the founder’s LinkedIn repeated the same ideas in public.
The Kotak Neo brief taught us something we now use in every AEO plan: in finance, a save is worth ten likes. People save what they plan to act on, and engines notice what people come back to.
Sub-sector matters too. Equity and broking fintechs, lending and credit fintechs and cross-border payments companies each have their own search behaviour and their own regulator. Case studies carry so much weight in fintech marketing because they give buyers and engines a specific, checkable claim. More of our finance work, including mutual funds, insurance, payments and wealth, is on the case studies and portfolio page.
How to start AEO: a 90-day plan for brand managers
Start AEO by measuring what AI engines say about you today, fixing the pages that should answer your top questions, then building proof and distribution around them.
Here’s the 90-day sequence we use with most brands. It’s built so you have something to show leadership by day 45.
Days 1 to 15: Baseline and audit
- List 50 to 100 real questions.Pull them from sales calls, customer support tickets, Google Search Console, People Also Ask, Reddit and your own team. Write them the way a customer would say them, including Hinglish.
- Ask the engines.Run each question through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode). Record whether you’re mentioned, how you’re described, which competitors appear and which sources are cited.
- Score your share of answers. The share of questions where you appear, versus your top three competitors. This is your baseline.
- Audit the foundations.Technical SEO health, crawler access in robots.txt, schema, author pages, and whether your About, product and pricing pages state the facts clearly.
- Map the off-site picture. What do Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, review sites and news say about you? Where are you missing or described wrongly?
Days 16 to 45: Fix and build the answer layer
- Rewrite your top 20 pages.Question-style headings, a direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words, a comparison table where it helps, sources, a named reviewer and a visible update date.
- Fill the gaps.Create the “vs”, “best for”, “how much does it cost” and “is it safe” pages your audience asks about and your site doesn’t answer.
- Make facts machine-readable.Real HTML tables, FAQ and Organisation schema that matches the page, alt text on charts, and one clear page per product or service.
- Set up the leadership voice.Interview one or two leaders and start a weekly LinkedIn rhythm on the same themes as your answer pages. Fintech brands build trust on LinkedIn through consistent, expert-led content.
Days 46 to 90: Prove and distribute
- Publish one piece of original data.A survey, an internal data cut or an index. Original numbers are the thing other sites quote and engines repeat.
- Turn every answer page into five formats.LinkedIn carousel, founder post, short video, X thread, newsletter section.
- Earn third-party mentions.Pitch the data to journalists, contribute expert quotes, update review profiles, and answer genuine questions on Reddit and Quora without spamming.
- Re-run the audit.Same questions, same engines. Report the change in share of answers, citations, branded search and leads to leadership.
Months 4 to 6: Scale what worked
Double down on the topics and formats that moved citations. Expand from 50 questions to 200. Add regional language content if your audience asks in Hindi or other languages. This is also when you decide whether to grow the budget. The team and calendar side of the first quarter is laid out in the first 90 days of a content marketing strategy.
The first audit is always humbling. Most brands find they’re invisible for half their own category questions, and described wrongly in a quarter of the rest. That’s good news. It means the plan writes itself.
How much does AEO cost in India?
A serious AEO programme in India starts at about ₹1,00,000 a month, run for at least six months. Below that, you can buy an audit or some optimised blogs, but not the writing, design, SEO and distribution that AEO needs together.
The ranges below are what we see across Indian brands in 2026, excluding GST and paid media.
Three budget tiers compared
| Foundation | Growth | Category leadership | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly budget | ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,50,000 | ₹1,50,000 to ₹3,50,000 | ₹3,50,000 to ₹7,00,000+ |
| Best for | One product line, a challenger brand, or proving AEO to leadership | Brands with 2 to 4 product lines or a competitive category | Category leaders, BFSI and other YMYL brands, multi-language audiences |
| Questions tracked | 50 | 150 | 300+ across languages |
| Answer pages per month | 6 to 8 new or rewritten | 12 to 16 | 20 to 30 |
| Design | Tables, charts and 1 to 2 infographics a month | Plus calculators or interactive tools every quarter | Plus a full research report design every quarter |
| Distribution | Company LinkedIn and one repurposing stream | Plus one leader’s LinkedIn, X or YouTube shorts | Plus 2 to 3 leaders, Reddit and community, newsletter |
| Proof and PR | Review profiles and expert quotes | One original data piece every 6 months | Quarterly research and active media outreach |
| Reporting | Monthly AI visibility report | Plus competitor tracking | Plus attribution and leadership dashboards |
| Realistic by month 6 | Visible in AI answers for a core set of questions; a clear baseline-vs-now story | Cited regularly for your main category questions; branded search rising | Among the default brands AI engines name in your category |
Where a ₹1,00,000 monthly budget goes
If you start at the Foundation tier, this is a typical split. It changes with what the audit finds.
| Workstream | Share | About ₹ per month | What it buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writing and editing | 35% | ₹35,000 | Answer pages, comparisons, FAQs, expert review |
| SEO, technical and schema | 20% | ₹20,000 | Fixes, internal links, schema, crawler access, page speed checks |
| Design | 15% | ₹15,000 | Tables, charts, infographics, page layouts |
| Distribution | 15% | ₹15,000 | LinkedIn posts and carousels, repurposing |
| AI visibility tracking and reporting | 10% | ₹10,000 | Prompt tracking across engines, monthly report |
| Proof and PR | 5% | ₹5,000 | Review profiles, expert-quote pitching |
One-time costs to plan for
- AEO audit and strategy: ₹75,000 to ₹2,00,000 once, depending on site size and the number of products. Some agencies, including ours, fold this into the first month of a retainer. This is the kind of work our content consultancy practice covers.
- Website fixes: If your site blocks crawlers, loads slowly or hides content behind scripts, budget for website development work separately. This ranges widely, from a few days of fixes to a rebuild.
- Tools: An SEO suite and an AI visibility tracker typically cost ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 a month together, depending on seats and prompt volume (approximate, at current dollar rates). An agency usually covers these.
When a brand manager asks me for the cheapest way to start, I say: buy fewer pages, not cheaper pages. Ten pages a machine trusts beat a hundred it ignores.
How to justify the budget internally
Frame AEO as protection plus growth. Protection: the organic clicks you’re already losing to AI summaries, which you can estimate from Search Console impressions that no longer turn into clicks. Growth: the higher-intent visitors AI search sends, which Semrush found convert at 4.4 times the value of a traditional organic visit. Commit to a six-month review with the baseline from day 15, so leadership is judging a measured change, not a promise.
What to expect from AEO, and when
Expect early AI citations in 6 to 12 weeks for questions where competition is thin, and steady category visibility in 4 to 8 months.
Engines that search the web live, like Perplexity, ChatGPT search and AI Overviews, react fastest. What a model “knows” without searching changes only when it’s retrained, which can take a year or more.
| When | What you should see | What you shouldn’t expect yet | What to report upward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | A baseline: share of answers, competitor gaps, wrong descriptions found | Any change in citations | The audit, and the top 20 pages to fix |
| Months 2 to 3 | First citations on Perplexity and in AI Overviews for long-tail questions; rewritten pages winning Featured Snippets and People Also Ask | Mentions for your most competitive “best X in India” questions | Questions moved from “not mentioned” to “mentioned” |
| Months 4 to 6 | Regular mentions for core category questions; branded search and direct traffic rising; leaders’ LinkedIn posts cited | Leadership on the most contested head terms | Share of answers vs competitors; branded search trend; assisted leads |
| Months 7 to 12 | Your brand named by default in comparisons; journalists and creators quoting your data | A finish line: models, competitors and questions keep changing | Pipeline and revenue influenced; cost per qualified lead vs paid channels |
These ranges match what we’ve seen on our own accounts: a cross-border fintech added 10,000+ monthly visitors and AI citations in 4 to 5 months, and a digital-lending NBFC saw ranking gains within 8 months. Brands with older domains and existing authority usually move faster than new ones.
The KPIs that matter for AEO
| KPI | What it tells you | How to measure it |
|---|---|---|
| Share of AI answers | How often you’re mentioned for your tracked questions vs competitors | Monthly prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| Citation count and quality | Whether engines link to your pages, and which ones | AI visibility tools; manual checks for top questions |
| Description accuracy | Whether engines describe your products, prices and policies correctly | Manual review of answers; flag errors to fix at source |
| Branded search volume | Whether AI mentions are making people look you up | Google Search Console, Google Trends |
| AI referral traffic and conversions | Visits and leads from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar | GA4 referral reports with a custom channel group for AI sources |
| Assisted pipeline | Whether AI-influenced visitors become customers | CRM source fields; “how did you hear about us” with an AI option |
Stop asking ‘how much traffic did we get?’ Start asking ‘how often were we the answer?’ Traffic is a lagging indicator now. Being the answer is the leading one.
In-house team, freelancers or an agency: which is right for AEO?
For most Indian brands starting out, an agency or a hybrid model is faster and cheaper than building a full in-house AEO team. AEO needs five or six skills at once, and few brands need each of them full-time in year one.
Whether you need an agency at all is a separate question, and how to check if you need a content marketing agency lays out the signs.
| In-house team | Freelancers | Specialist agency | Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Approximate monthly cost | ₹4,00,000 to ₹8,00,000+ for a writer, SEO lead, designer and social lead, plus tools | ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000, varies widely | ₹1,00,000 to ₹7,00,000 | One salary plus an agency retainer |
| Time to start | 2 to 4 months to hire | 2 to 4 weeks | 2 to 3 weeks | 3 to 6 weeks |
| Skills covered | Only the roles you hire | One skill per person | Writing, design, SEO, distribution, reporting under one roof | Strategy in-house, execution at the agency |
| Brand and product knowledge | Highest | Lowest | Builds over 1 to 3 months; faster with sector specialists | High |
| Who coordinates | You | You, across several people | The agency | Your lead, with one agency contact |
| Best for | Large brands with steady, high volume | Small, one-off tasks | Brands proving AEO or scaling fast | Mid to large brands planning to build capability |
In-house costs are approximate, based on typical Indian salaries for mid-level roles in 2026; they change by city and seniority.
How to pick an AEO agency in India
Ask five questions in the first call:
- Can you show me an AI citation you earned for a client, with the before and after?Screenshots and dates, not adjectives.
- Who will write, and do they know my sector? In finance, health or law, ask for a sample on a topic from your own category.
- How do design and distribution fit into your plan?If the answer is only blogs and keywords, it’s SEO with a new label.
- How will you measure share of AI answers?Ask to see a sample report.
- What’s your compliance and fact-check process?Especially for regulated categories.
For banks, brokers, AMCs, insurers and fintechs, the evaluation goes wider, and an 8-point checklist for choosing an organic marketing agency in BFSI and fintech covers sector experience, compliance workflow and pilots.
Common AEO mistakes brand managers make
Most AEO programmes that stall do so for the same handful of reasons, and almost none of them are about tools.
- Treating it as a tool purchase. A tracking tool tells you where you stand. It doesn’t write, design or distribute.
- Writing for machines, not people. Stuffed FAQs and robotic answers lose readers and, eventually, engines. Google’s guidance is explicit that content should exist primarily to help people.
- Publishing AI-written content without expert review. Engines are trained to avoid repeating unreliable sources. A wrong number can cost you trust with readers, engines and regulators.
- Ignoring off-site presence. If Reddit, YouTube and the news don’t mention you, your website alone rarely wins.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Check robots.txt and your CDN or firewall settings. Many brands block GPTBot or other AI crawlers without anyone deciding to.
- Measuring only traffic. Fewer clicks can come with more visibility and better leads. Track share of answers and branded search too.
- Stopping at month three. Most of the compounding happens after month four.
The brands that win AEO aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re the ones whose writers, designers, SEO team and CEO all tell the same story, every week, for a year.
Frequently asked questions about AEO
What is AEO in marketing?
AEO (answer engine optimisation) is the practice of making your brand the source that AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity quote or recommend when people ask questions in your category. It combines clear writing, structured content, SEO, design, PR and distribution.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in search results so people click. AEO aims to get your brand named or cited inside the AI-generated answer, often with no click. AEO builds on SEO fundamentals but also depends on off-site mentions, original data and leadership visibility.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Mostly, yes. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the term used in academic research; AEO is the term more marketers use. Both describe optimising for AI-generated answers. The five steps to get cited in LLM responses cover the GEO side in more detail.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Early citations usually appear in 6 to 12 weeks for less competitive questions, and steady visibility for core category questions takes 4 to 8 months. Results depend on your domain’s existing authority, your category’s competition and how consistently you publish and distribute.
How much does AEO cost in India?
A meaningful AEO programme in India starts at around ₹1,00,000 a month, run for at least six months. Growth programmes typically cost ₹1,50,000 to ₹3,50,000 a month, and category-leadership programmes ₹3,50,000 to ₹7,00,000 or more. A one-time audit costs ₹75,000 to ₹2,00,000.
Can I do AEO in-house?
Yes, if you can cover writing, SEO, design, distribution and measurement. Most brands start with an agency or a hybrid model because hiring all of those roles takes months and costs more in year one.
How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Write down the 50 questions your customers ask most, run them through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and record whether you’re mentioned, how you’re described and which sources are cited. AI visibility tools automate this at scale.
Does schema markup help with AEO?
It helps engines understand your pages, but it isn’t a shortcut. Google says no special markup is required to appear in AI Overviews. Use schema that accurately matches what’s visible on the page, and focus on clear content first.
Should I block AI crawlers from my website?
Only if you have a clear reason, such as paywalled or licensed content. Blocking AI crawlers makes it harder for those engines to cite you. Decide this deliberately with your legal and tech teams.
Does AEO work for regulated sectors like BFSI and healthcare?
Yes, and it matters more there, because AI engines are cautious with money and health topics and favour sources that show expertise and trust. Content must be accurate, reviewed and compliant with SEBI, RBI, IRDAI or other relevant rules.
Does AEO work in Hindi and other Indian languages?
Yes. Google has added Hindi to AI Overviews and AI Mode. If your customers search in regional languages, answer pages in those languages are an open opportunity, because few brands have built them.
Will AEO replace paid ads?
No. AEO reduces how much you depend on paid channels for discovery and trust, but most brands still use paid media for reach and conversion. The two work best together.
